Chavurah

chavurah (חבורה), which comes from the Hebrew word for "group" or "fellowship," is a small, informal gathering typically centered around shared religious, spiritual, or social activities. The term is often used to describe a group of people who come together to study Torah, observe Jewish rituals, celebrate holidays, or engage in social action—outside of a traditional synagogue setting.

At Gesher, our chavurah is designed with the women of our community in mind, whom we consider “the true leaders.” Unlike our sisterhood, which is one group open to all women, the chavurah groups are smaller and organized by common life stages — such as age, the school age of children, empty nesters, and, of course, our wiser women!

Key Features of the Gesher Chavurah:

  • Informality and Flexibility: Nothing about our chavurah groups is formal. Gatherings may take place regularly or sporadically, depending on members' schedules and interests. The structure is relaxed, and participation is driven by what works for the group.
  • Focus on Community: A chavurah provides a close-knit, supportive environment for Jewish women and their families. It fosters a sense of belonging and connection, allowing participants to build deeper relationships with one another and feel supported in their spiritual and personal journeys.
  • Customizable Practices: Each chavurah tailors its activities to its members' collective interests and needs. This could include alternative prayer styles, spiritual growth, charity work, or simply coming together for a fun evening of conversation and life discussion.

Overall, a chavurah at Gesher offers a more personalized, intimate way for women to engage with their faith, their community, and one another. It’s ideal for those seeking a less formalized approach to Jewish life, while still cultivating deep spiritual and communal bonds. These groups all led by volunteers from our GLT Community.
